Who “Owns” the Unemployed?

10 November 2009 | By joe-kgmi in Uncategorized

We recently learned that unemployment has reached its highest level in 26 years.  That’s awful.  Most of us at one time or another have experienced the sting of being out of work and all the hardships that brings for our families and ourselves.

But who’s fault is the continued high jobless figure?  The right wants to pin it on Obama, which is to be expected but shouldn’t be believed.  Let’s go back in time 26 years and check who was in the White House - oh, that’s right, it was Ronald Reagan.  Two years into his term and his economic policies still hadn’t reigned in the high unemployment that blossomed from the Carter recession.  And I call it the Carter recession because it began under his administration, just as the current economic mess began under Obama’s predecessor.

My point is not to discredit Reagan’s economic policies but rather to defend Obama from critics who think he should be slammed for not magically putting every American back to work.  He’s said all along that unemployment would remain painfully high for quite a while, and an honest look back at the history of past recessions shows that job increases really come at the end of a recovery rather than at the beginning.

Once again, it’s o.k. to criticise Obama or any other politician you might disagree with, but we must be “honest in our arguments.”

  1. Thanks so much Joe for making our point, 9/11 was clintons fault.

  2. The economy does what it wants, this is capitalism. There is no reason to believe the government can be directly responsible for quickly “fixing” deep seated problems that have developed over many years. It took Reagan years to ‘fix’ it and it will take Obama years as well. Unfortunately politicians and talking heads prey on the fear, uncertainty and anger of those that don’t have jobs to whip up opposition to the current political party in control. Don’t talk about how to fix the problem just talk about how it’s not being fixed by whoever is in office.

  3. The simple truth is that small business owners, who employ about 70% of the people in this country, are in business to make a profit. As long as they see onerous requirements and sky high taxes coming down the pike, they are not going to hire. It’s really that simple.
    Which means that the stimulus for one, and all the other programs that liberals want to implement for the “common good,” are directly responsible for the job losses.

  4. The important comparison between this recession and the Carter recession is not that they were inherited, but that those who inherited them responded in exactly opposite ways–with predictable results. Reagan responded by doing those things that have been historically proven to stimulate economic growth and job creation. Obama is responding in a way that has been historically proven to create/exacerbate economic woes. Thus, when the Fed said unemployment could go as high as 8%, I’ll give that to Bush. Now that they’re heading toward 11% the logical place to lay blame for the expansion of misery is the Obama economic policy.

  5. The trouble with Capitalism is it requires people to Capitalize on others. Where’s the good in that? And I don’t want this answered by Rich people, or those who just don’t know where they’re sitting on the class/caste food chain.

    No amount of fudging the facts will change that.

    They can go ahead and answer anyways but their responses will just be all too predictable anyway. Take it from a recently unemployed person, it becomes clearer after you’ve been chewed up and spit out.

    Dennis Hopper as his Huey Walker character in the movie Flashback summed Reaganomics up pretty well I’d say: “Great, so Now we got the Truly Needy and the TRULY greedy.”

  6. Hey Barncat, you can move to cuba or Russia you will be right at home with your bumper sticker thinking. Our system is great and should never be changed. I’m sorry your a lazy person and want something from others for nothing. Your empty suit of a president is doing a pretty good job with hopey changey, I hope we all have more than change left in our pockets when he gets done raping the US citizens.

  7. Ah nope, you don’t know me and you’re guessing. :D Once again {no matter how much you admire and emulate me here patterning yourself after me and all LoL!} I’m noticing there doesn’t seem to be any debates about this kind of thing without people insulting, accusing and attacking eachother. {Or in your case Cloning?}

    Obama never promised you a rose garden, he did say things’d get worse before they got better. It wasn’t that hard a phrase to miss. {And now to see what else KGMI Blogs’ very own “Tom&Jerry Show”’s been up to around here.} This is getting funny, and sad, both. Barn… Dog, what a hoot.

  8. Obama owns them now 100%, plus a few car companies, and banks to boot.
